APA (NSW) Member Update – Single Trainee Paramedic Responses

APA (NSW) Member Update

Single Trainee Paramedic Responses

Wednesday 4 April 2018

Dear Member,

Members have reported instances whereby trainee paramedics are being responded single. This is unacceptable and shows how just how desperate and heavily under resourced the NSW Ambulance is.

It is APA (NSW)’s position that under no circumstances should trainees be responded on their own. To do so would be negligent and puts not only the public but also the paramedic at unnecessary risk. We are appalled that the NSW Ambulance, who claim to care about the welfare and well-being of their staff, has deemed it acceptable to send their least experienced and most vulnerable paramedics to jobs on their own. Actions speak louder than words.

We direct our trainee paramedic members not to respond single under ANY circumstances irrespective of being directed to do so by Control. Instead, inform Control that you will wait at a staged location for your supervising paramedic and then respond accordingly. Should you run into any issues, immediately contact your APA (NSW) delegate or the APA (NSW) office for assistance.

We strongly advise all members, including rapid responders, ECPs, DOMs, PICU etc to exercise due diligence when responding to cases. In any instance where you feel concerned for your safety, you must refuse to respond and ‘stand off’ until back-up arrives. Your safety is paramount!
